Sample job, made-up numbers
- Job
- 3-bedroom house clean
- What the client paid
- $180
- Hours on site
- 4
- Hours around the job (driving, quoting)
- 1.5
- Supplies used
- $18
Your real hourly pay on this job: $29.45
What the job looked like: $45.00 an hour
Real pay is 65% of the number you guessed
*Real hourly pay is what is left after supplies, divided by every hour the job took.
- Left after supplies: $180 paid minus $18 supplies is $162
- Every hour: 4 on site plus 1.5 around the job is 5.5
- Real pay: $162 divided by 5.5 hours is $29.45 an hour
- The guess: $180 divided by 4 hours on site is $45.00 an hour
Sample only. These are made-up numbers for one house clean. They are not your pay, and they are not a quote.
What do I really earn per hour?
Most new cleaners set a price by looking at what other cleaners charge. That is the market price, and it is not the number you are missing.
The number you are missing is your own real hourly pay: what is left of a job after supplies, divided by every hour it took, on site and off.
Once you know it, a price stops being a guess. It becomes a decision.
How the number gets found
Three steps take you from a guess to a price you can say out loud to a client.
Count the whole job
Write down what the client paid, what the supplies cost, and every hour the job took, on site and off.
Find your real hourly pay
Take away the supplies, then divide what is left by all of those hours. That number is yours, and it can sit well below the one you guessed.
Price from your own number
Set the next price so the work pays what it is worth to you. The toolkit hands you the tools to do that.
